Looking at the Safety curtain with Archibold Ramsden in the centre. I had the experience of lowering this curtain during the intervals – or was at the end of the first house – I can,t remember. I do remember how hard it was to raise it again. It was done by winding a handle at the opside of the stage and it was very hard work for one so young. No mater how fast you wound the handle the curtain went up very very slowly. When it was finally at the top one very exhausted young man would crawl away to a quiet corner to recover not helped by the older stage hands teasing me about not being strong enough. I wonder what happened to this formidable “Safety Curtain” – is it still there. The orchestra pit brought back some memories but I will tell you about them some other time if you are interestd. I’ve always wondered if the theatre will ever re-open and be restored again, could you also tell me why nothing seems to be happening there, (restoring it). If you could keep me informed, it would be very apreciated, many thanks, Jay Downes aged 17.
